RIVERSIDE -- Taking advantage of four unearned runs, the visiting Antelope Valley College (AVC) Maurauders edged the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's softball team, 6-5, in a non-conference game Thursday (Feb. 16) at Brown Field (Samuel C. Evans Sports Complex).
Antelope Valley (7-3 overall) pushed across a pair of runs (unearned) in the second and third innings, and then tallied single runs (both unearned) in the fifth and sixth frames.
Riverside City (3-4 overall) parlayed a pair of walks into runs in the third inning. Trailing, 6-2, heading into the bottom of the sixth, RCC sandwiched singles around a walk to load the bases with no outs. After a fielder's choice forced a runner at home plate, sophomore RHP Laura Mendez (Rialto - Carter HS '15) - who is pictured - drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field. Sophomore pinch hitter Simoriah Scharer then delivered a RBI single to right field to close the gap to 6-5.
RCC sophomore starting LHP Emily Wilcox, who went the first 5.0 innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk, drew the loss (1-2), but also went two for two with one RBI.
AVC reliever Kyrstan Cook came on in the bottom of the third and pitched the final 5.0 innings and allowed three runs (earned) on seven hits and three walks to improve to 3-1.
Riverside returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when it hosts the Cerritos College Falcons in a 1 p.m. non-conference start, weather permitting.
