He was named an NCAA All-American in each season which led to him being drafted 96th overall by the St. Louis Rams in the 1998 NFL Draft.

He was a member of the 1999-2000 Super Bowl Championship. During the 1999 season, he hauled in 36 passes for 677 yards leading to eight touchdowns which led to him making the 1999 All-Madden Team. In all four seasons with the Rams, he crossed the end line 16 times for a total of 2,032 yards while being amongst the league-leaders in punt return yardage. During those seasons, he played alongside Kurt Warner and Tory Holt.

He moved on in 2001 to play four season with the Detroit Lions and was the first player to score a touchdown at Ford Field. He continued to play two seasons with the New Orleans Saints in 2005 and 2006 during the Katrina Hurricane season.

After retiring from the NFL, Hakim hopped into the coaching realm first at Palomar College as the wide receiver coach.

In 2001, he established the Az Hakim Foundation which helps kids whose parents are incarcerated.

Hakim has a daughter, a son, and has three siblings.
