CCCAA Board of Directors Provide More Updates on Return to Play

The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) held its 2020 Fall Convention this past week in a virtual format amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. A number of updates have been confirmed regarding return to competition and the contingency plan released in early July.

Prior to the Board of Director's meeting and the Fall Convention this week, the CCCAA Covid-19 Working Group, comprised of top leadership across the state, released new recommendations on safe return to play. They are listed below.

Option One - Continue with the Contingency Plan as approved on July 9.

Option Two - Modify the maximum percentage of competition permitted (currently 70%), limit competition to conference contests only and eliminate regional postseason competition.

Option Three - Modify the maximum percentage of competition permitted (currently 70%), limit competition to conference contests only, eliminate regional postseason competition, and review potentially moving sports around based on contact level and status of the pandemic.

The CCCAA Board of Directors decided to proceed with option one with suggestions that the COVID-19 Working Group determine opt-in/opt-out dates for institutions to indicate participation for the Spring. This is with the understanding that extenuating circumstances may arise leading some institutions to opt out at a later date.

Additionally, the Board of Directors approved a motion to provide student-athletes a waiver for any CCCAA competition during the 2020-21 athletic year in order to support the success, safety and well-being of student-athletes.

Riverside County recently returned to the "purple" stage which is classified as widespread according to state guidelines.
