Former Swimming & Diving Head Coach Tony Turner Passes Away at 88

The Riverside City College athletic department is grieving the loss of longtime coach and kinesiology professor, Tony Turner, who passed away in late March at the age of 88.

Turner, who was born in Watford, England, was the Tigers swimming and diving Coach for 30 years (1964 – 1993). He made a home for himself at Riverside City College after a successful career as a student-athlete. Fate, love and a desire to leave a legacy brought him to the RCC Athletics family.

He was a well-recognized face around campus after being honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Physical Education. Turner was best known for his vision and dedication as the founder of the Riverside Aquatics Association (RAA) in 1965. The RAA has been a force in the community ever since.

His love for the sport grew at an early age. He was a member of the Highgate Diving Club in London, competed all over Europe and became a member of the 1952 British Olympic Team, representing Great Britain at the Helsinki Olympic Games.

He transferred to the University of Michigan where he helped the swimming and diving team earn three-consecutive NCAA National Titles and was named an All-American.

Tony is survived by his wife of 64 years, son Derek, daughter Leigh, five grandchildren, and family in England.

In lieu of flowers, please consider writing a short note to Marilyn Turner at 654 Skyline Road, Ventura, CA 93003.

The family has no plans for a formal service.
