at Riverside City College Tigers 3, Sacramento City College Panthers 0 (nonconference)
RIVERSIDE – Scoreless until the eighth inning, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team pushed across three runs en route to a 3-0 non-conference victory over the Sacramento City College (SCC) Panthers Thursday evening at the Evans Sports Complex.
With a prevailing game-time temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, neither team was able to muster any semblance of a rally through the first seven innings. The game took only 2:13 to play.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Riverside City (7-4) parlayed back-to-back walks to freshman C Michael Deceglie (Rancho Cucamonga / Los Osos HS) and freshman CF K.C. Huth (La Verne / Bonita HS) to put Tigers at first and second bases. Up stepped sophomore 1B Daniel Arellano (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) who socked a 1-2 pitch into left-center field for a RBI double to plate Deceglie with the game's first run. With freshman DH David Schuknecht (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS) at the plate, Huth scored on a wild pitch which moved Arellano to third. After a walk to Schuknecht, Arellano scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 RCC lead.
RCC threatened to score in the seventh, but Schuknecht was tagged at the plate on a fielder's choice following a bunt.
Both starting pitchers were extremely effective before leaving with no decisions. SCC starting LHP Ben Brooks pitched seven (7.0) innings and allowed just two harmless hits and no walks while striking out 11. RCC starting sophomore transfer LHP Kenny Mathews (Diamond Bar / Diamond Bar HS / Cal State Fullerton) went the first six (6.0) innings and also allowed two hits and no walks and struck out seven.
RCC sophomore RHP Blake Burrell (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) tossed the final three frames and allowed one hit with four strikeouts to get the win (1-0). SCC sophomore RHP Kyle Roybal gained only one out in the fateful eighth and allowed only one hit (Arellano's RBI double), but allowed all three runs (all earned) and three walks to see his record fall to 0-2.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m.
