Williams Solo HR in Tenth Inning Helps Golden West Get 3-2 Win at Riverside
RIVERSIDE – Soloman Williams socked a two-out, solo home run in the top of tenth inning to power the Golden West College Rustlers to a 3-2 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) win over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team Tuesday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.
Williams, a sophomore first baseman from Long Beach (Wilson HS), went three for four on the day with two runs, including the solo shot, his first of the year, to pace Golden West (19-9, 7-6 OEC).
The Rustlers took a 1-0 in the top of the second inning on a RBI single by sophomore RF Sean Whiteman (Huntington Beach / Edison HS), then tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth on a RBI sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Andrew Yazdanbakhsh (Garden Grove / Los Alamitos HS) which drove in Williams.
Riverside (18-11 overall, 7-7 OEC) scored in the fourth and fifth innings when sophomore 2B Brandon Van Horn (La Canada Flintridge / St. Francis HS) and freshman DH David Schuknecht (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS / U. of Arizona) each scored, respectively, on passed balls, although Schukneckt's score eventually became an earned run. Schuknecht went two for five to lead the Tigers' offense.
The ten-inning contest was the first extra-inning game of the season for Riverside. And it only took 3:05 to play.
Sophomore RHP Joseph Molina (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS) came on in relief in the tenth and was ticketed for the loss (0-2), while GWC freshman RHP Michael Farris (Garden Grove / Los Alamitos HS) pitched two innings to notch his first win of the season (1-1). An interesting side note was that none of the Tigers' three pitchers recorded a strikeout. However, RCC sophomore 1B Daniel Arellano (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) recorded 17 of the Tigers' 30 putouts on defense.
Both teams face each other to conclude the three-game season series on Thursday, April 11, at 2 p.m. in Huntington Beach.
