RIVERSIDE – Jumping out to a lead from which it was never headed, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team won, 71-58, over the visiting Saddleback College Gauchos in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday evening at the newly renovated Wheelock Gymnasium.
Riverside (11-10, 4-1 OEC) led, 6-0, 11-4 and 18-9 en route to a big lead of 34-20 with 6:45 remaining in the first half before settling for a 39-32 advantage at the intermission. The Tigers stretched their margin to its biggest at 62-42, with, ironically, 6:45 left in the game on a pair of free throws by freshman forward Kayla Johns (Moreno Valley HS). Johns would finish with 12 points and game-high ten rebounds.
Freshman guard Leilani Chavez (Corona) led the Tigers with 18 points. Sophomore guard Neka Hunter (Riverside Poly HS) helped with nine points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Saddleback (10-12, 1-4 OEC) was led by freshman guard Myishia Watkins (Mt. Miguel HS) with a game-high 23 points on an assortment of off-balance jumpers and also dished out a game-high seven assists.
Both teams return to OEC action this Friday, Jan. 25, at 5:30 p.m. when Saddleback hosts the Santa Ana College Dons and Riverside visits the Irvine Valley College Lasers.
