at Riverside City College Tigers 51, Santa Ana College Dons 41 (Orange Empire Conf.)
RIVERSIDE – Surviving a pair of second-half scoring flurries by the visitors, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's basketball team held off the Santa Ana College Dons down the stretch and posted a 51-41 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) win Wednesday evening at Wheelock Gymnasium.
Santa Ana (9-18, 1-10 OEC), which trailed only 24-21 at halftime, briefly led, 25-24, with 17:27 to play on a layin by sophomore guard Liliana Gonzalez (El Rancho HS). The Tigers nursed a 29-27 lead with 13:14 left into a 36-28 advantage with 10:56 remaining. Undaunted, the Dons narrowed the gap to 36-34 with 8:23 to play before RCC responded with a 6-0 run to make the score 42-34 with4:53 left on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Neka Hunter (Riverside / Polytechnic HS).
Hunter led Riverside (15-11, 8-2 OEC) with a co-game-high 14 points and a game-high six assists. Speaking of assists, RCC collected 15 assists on the 17 field goals made. Freshman forward Kayla Johns (Moreno Valley HS) pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds (ten defensive) and added six points. Sophomore forward Berniz Chang (San Bernardino / Redlands) added 12 points.
For SAC, Gonzalez led the Dons with a co-game-high 14 points. Freshman center Carly Ducat (Fountain Valley HS) led the Pirates witad six points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Riverside will be idle this Friday, Feb. 15, but will return to OEC action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when it visits the Saddleback College Gauchos in a 7:30 p.m. OEC tipoff. Santa Ana will be idleuntil Friday, Feb. 22, when it hosts Saddleback in a 7:30 p.m. battle.
