Two of the Top Teams Square Off
The Lady Tiger's won the 1st annual dual meet against Mt. Sac on Friday night. This is the first time the two most dominate teams in the State over the past few years have faced each other in a head to head competition. The Tigers were 2nd at the State Championships last year and Mt.Sac won the State Championships the previous year.
Jessika Byrd started the day with a win in the Hammer throw. The tigers placed 1st -3rd in that event. Mt Sac and The Tigers traded punches the whole meet but it was a couple of key 1,2,3 sweeps that helped the Tigers pull off the victory. Freshman Brandee Rodrigues lead the way winning three races. Rodriguez, along with Aariana Goshen, Shiloah Williams, and Taylor Coffelt won the 4x100m relay with a season best of 49.07. Rodriguez won the 60m with a blazing time of 7.82 and the 300m in 41.36. The Tigers, sweep the 600m with Williams leading the way in a PR of 1:41.43. Jessica Giacoletti placed 1st in the High Jump (5'4) with Joshulyn Penniman right behind her at 5'2. Penniman then lead a 1-2 finish in the Triple jump with a jump of 35'3 ¼" . Bi'Jon Jackson was 2nd (34' 1 ¼ "). The Lady Tigers went 1-5 in the Javelin Throw. Claira Polinwon the event with a throw of 106ft. The Ladies also went 1-2 in the discuss with Fatima Vegara winning with a throw of 132"10 ½". The meet Score was Riverside 78 Mt. Sac 67.
This was an early but competitive meet. The Lady Tigers did a good job showing that they can compete when they are challenged. We have a long season ahead of us, but if we continue to work hard and compete like we did against a very good team in Mt. Sac, we will develop into a Championship team.
Riverside will be back in action against Saddleback and Santa Ana on Friday, February 22nd at home. Field events start at 1pm and running event start at 3pm.
