Bio

Scott Hanes has returned to Riverside City College for his first season as Pole Vault Coach since 2000. He served in the same role at RCC from 1996 to 2000, helping to develop a strong foundation for the program. 

Following his initial tenure at RCC, Coach Hanes transitioned into educational leadership, serving as Technology Coordinator and Athletic Director at Ramona High School from 2001 to 2006. He then returned to coaching, leading as Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach, as well as Pole Vault Coach, at Arlington High School from 2006–2010.

From 2011 to 2018, he stepped away from high school coaching to focus on family, remaining actively involved in youth athletics. During this time, he coached his children in various sports, including training his oldest son as a soccer goalkeeper, introducing his middle son to pole vault in fifth grade, and supporting his daughter as she competed in cross country and track throughout her youth and high school years. His son, Gavin Hanes, went on to become the CIF Division II Pole Vault Champion in 2022 (16’3½”) at Ramona High School and is currently a senior hurdler and pole vaulter at Cal Poly Pomona.

Coach Hanes returned to Ramona High School in 2018, where he served as Head Track & Field Coach and Pole Vault Coach through 2026.

A former student-athlete, Coach Hanes competed in pole vault at Riverside City College and Utah State University. He ranks third all-time in RCC history with a mark of 16’½” and was a member of the 1989 state championship team. At Utah State, he ranks 10th all-time (16’7”) and placed fourth at the 1992 Big West Championships.

He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Riverside City College in 1990, a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Utah State University in 1994, and a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from Azusa Pacific University.

In addition to coaching, Coach Hanes is a Coding and Robotics teacher in the Riverside Unified School District and has been an educator since 1995.

He resides in Riverside with his wife, Courtney, and their three children: Aiden, Gavin, and Skye. 

He is passionate about developing student-athletes both on and off the runway, emphasizing discipline, confidence, and technical excellence.
