Tigers Brake Their Own Record at So. CA Championships
The Tigers broke the record for most points ever scored at a Southern California Championship with a total of 225 point. This surpassed last year's record set by the Tigers which was 200.3.
The second place finisher was Mt. SAC with 94 points, and finishing third was San Diego Mesa with 92 points.
Next week the Tigers have a chance to break the state meet scoring record which is 141 points set by Taft Community College in the 1980's when they were able to give scholarships, something that California Community Colleges have not been allowed to do for the past 25 years. " This team is really focused and mature they are firing on all cylinders at the right time." Coach McCarron.
Of the 21 events contested at the state meet RCC will have at least one Tiger in 19 of the 21 events. In many cases they will have multiple people in each event. At the southern California finals RCC's 4x4 team ran 3:09.3, the second fastest time in school history and the fastest time in the State.
Just'n Thymes ran 10.4 and 20.68 to easily qualify in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Sterling Winston ran 47.3 to qualify in the 400 meters. In the 800 meters RCC had three men ( Luiz Gutierrez Bennett Harris and Willie Contreras) run 1:51 and earned three of the four spots to head to San Mateo next week. Willie ran a four seconds personal best to earn his spot. Luis was the Southern California Champion in the 1500 m.
In the 110 hurdles Jordan Morris and Chris Navarro both of whom will represent the Tigers in the decathlon at state along with Philip Bailey all qaulified in the 110HH.
RCC qualified 3 athletes in the 400 intermediate hurdles; Zachary Lewis Nick Reynolds and Jacob Porter.
In the javelin Chris Navarro and Emad Shalabi both qualified, with Chris Navarro winning the event.
In the shot put RCC qualified for to the state meet with Conor Einck and Mark Sutton leading the way. Mark Sutton threw a 4 foot PR to make it into state. "Coach Robinson has done a fantastic job with our throwers and seeing Mark make the state meet was a huge bonus for our team." Coach McCarron.
In the hammer throw the Tigers qualified two athletes and one in the discus.
In the long jump Gary Davidson jumped a personal best of 23 feet to make it to state. In the hammer throw, John Guzman was the Southern California Champion in the 5000 meters and 10000 meters. He has a good chance to win both at the state meet.
The state championship will take place next Friday and Saturday at San Mateo Community College. If the Tigers are victorious it will be their fifth state championship in six years.
