Riverside Secures Spot in 3C2A State Championship Game
Riverside City College jumped out to an early lead and scrapped to hold on for a 13-12 overtime win over Santa Barbara City College and earn its spot in the 3C2A State Championship game on Saturday.
The Tigers improve to 24-11, while the Vaqueros slip to 33-8 on the year.
Angelina Beall led Riverside with five goals, while Yosra Elseifi and Presley Burrell each added three goals and Isabella Stolpp scored twice.
Elseifi got things going with a 5-meter goal early in the first before Beall rocketed in a shot with her back to the goal to put RCC up 2-0. Beall then grabbed a rebound off the crossbar early in the second quarter and backhanded it into the cage to increase Riverside's cushion to 3-0.
SBCC broke through in the second and managed to pull within one goal, 6-5, at halftime.
Intensity picked up in the final few minutes of action as the Vaqueros took a 10-9 lead, but Burrell skipped in the tying goal and then found Beall, who backhanded the go-ahead goal with just over a minute left to play.
SBCC had the ball with 21 seconds left on the clock and drew a 5-meter to send the game into overtime, tied at 11-11.
Stolpp scored the first goal in the extra period and Beall slipped in another backhanded goal with a minute left to give the Tigers some separation.
It came down to the final 10 seconds of overtime, but Alyssa Cortez (eight saves) made a big-time save to preserve the13-12 win for RCC.
The Tigers will face Long Beach in the championship game, which is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
